Still sick…

Still feverish, still sick, still starting the night in her car seat (but finishing it with us!).

Family weekend

Little Bear’s Auntie M (Papa’s sister) had her engagement party this weekend. It was a nice time with family and friends and, despite yet another cold, Little Bear held up admirably. It’s fun to see her interact with family members. She is definitely partial to the four grandparents she sees every week and it’s neat to see each of them with her. They are four very different people and they each have their own way of involving themselves in her play. One thing’s for sure: you will never find four people who love a little girl as much as these four do. She’s one lucky Bear!

Time, flying.

In less than two months, Little Bear turns one… ONE! And now that report cards are done, Mama needs to get on the party planning train! I think we’re going with a spring/bird theme. Or Hello Kitty, depending on which invitations I like the best. Of course, since I don’t have nearly enough on my “to do” list, I’m making said invitations.

Which is why tonight’s picture is of my computer. Good night!

Shy cat

Shy cat may or may not be on a hunger strike (she must learn from Little Bear). The hunger strike may or may not be because the cats are on diet food now. So we feed her tuna.

We have standing!

Little Bear has been standing up with varying degrees of success for a few weeks now, but never longer than 30 seconds or so and still with lots of wobbles. But the last two days…. it’s on! She can even multi-task, as shown below. I wanted to get a pic without the bottle (because most of the time she squeals and claps when she figures out she’s vertical) but it was that time of night and she wasn’t having any of it. She was even going up and down from a squatting position. That’s my girl!

Standing!

And here’s one for last night. I was too tired to post!

Hurricane Little Bear

Clean rooms must mean Hurricane Little Bear is asleep and Mama has some quiet time on her hands because these rooms certainly don’t look like this during the day (and, honestly, don’t look like this some nights!).

New shoes

“Momma always says there's an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes.”

Little Bear got her first pair of “new shoes” today! I put “new shoes” in quotation marks because she’s had shoes before. Some were “real” shoes but were secondhand, some were “real” shoes but were gifts from others, some were “new” but weren’t actually “shoes…” You get the picture. Anyway, after a lot of agonizing, I chose this pair, from See Kai Run. The light colored toes may have been a mistake but I love them and they’re supposed to fit really well. Though, when it comes down to it, it’s not like they asked the nearest ten-month-old for their footwear preference. Anyway, she finally was still enough for me to take pictures of them. Love!

You may have realized by now that “finally still enough” meant that she fell asleep. Which means that I took the opportunity to take more pictures of her. As always, clicking on the picture takes you to Flickr.

Tired

This seemed like an appropriate name for this post, as it was originally going to focus around this picture:
but have coincided with me being generally tired (from constantly being on the go) and tired (of having issues with my computer). But, back to the picture.

Little Bear has never been what you would call a "easy" sleeper. When she was an infant, she had jaundice and slept all the time. We had to keep her awake during nursing by tickling her and rubbing her with a cold, wet washcloth and then wake her every two hours to eat. Once she got over that, she had trouble going down again on her own and we employed the "5 S's" to calm her down. Well that turned in to a reliance on white noise and rocking. Because of the constant nursing and waking, we decided to bed share, which we ended up loving. All except that 5-6 times per night that we were up with her. So, as the two working, tired parents that we were, we decided to move her to her own room. It's worked pretty well. She got herself down to 3 times per night for awhile, and now hovers around 1/2. So she's sleeping between about 7pm and 6:30 am with two interruptions. Pretty good, as far as the "experts" say.

But she still can't/won't go to sleep on her own, for the most part. Also, with five different caregivers, five days a week (Nana, Boppa, Uncle Eirik, Grandma/Grandpa, and day care) she has no schedule whatsoever. Case in point: sometimes she only takes a morning nap and is so tired she crashes at four when I get home only to be awake until 9:30. She doesn't have the skills to fall asleep on her own, but doesn't want to be rocked or patted, and we refuse to let her "cry it out." So that leaves us.... oh yeah, I'm not really sure where.

Our most recent (read: today) plan is to keep her to one nap a day, at noon. Then she'll be good and tired by then and go down without a fuss, and will be ready for bed at 7, which is when I think she needs to be there to get a good night's sleep. I don't know if this is going to work. I love cuddling with Little Bear but to go through 2 hours of bedtime every night when she's clearly either overtired or not tired enough is wearing on everyone. So this starts the two weeks of our plan. Stay tuned (though, please understand that I realize this is only interesting to me. And maybe Papa) and we'll see how it goes.

Oh yeah, the picture is from a car ride today. Well, after the car ride, obviously. She was so tired she fell asleep in the car seat and we couldn't wake her up. I hope we're doing the right thing...

Family naps

One of my favorite weekend traditions is napping with Little Bear. Ever since we moved her into her own room, I’ve missed having her cuddle up by my side. Today Papa even climbed in bed with us! The rain outside made for a perfect afternoon.

More bath time

Now that Little Bear is feeling a little better from her earache, bath time is fun again. She just loves standing up, despite all our admonishments. Yes, I’m having a battle of wills with a ten-month old. What?

Silly girl

Silly little girl has been making this face all day. It makes me feel slightly better since she's apparently had an ear infection all week and I've done nothing about it. What a crazy, silly baby!

Goodnight

You know it’s been a long day when I regress to taking pictures of the toys.

Corn Meal

We got Little Bear this cool sand and water table and filled it with cornmeal which…. she won’t touch.

Sleepy time

Why does Little Bear have such a hard time going to sleep? We’ve started giving her her bottle in her crib, which works wonders, but a nagging voice inside me tells me that it’s not a good habit to get into. I mean, who wouldn’t want to sleep with all these friends nearby?

Happy 10 month birthday, Little Bear!

You are such a sweet, funny, energetic little girl and I can’t get enough of you. Lately you’ve been learning things like crazy. Just today, you picked up Papa’s cell phone and started pressing buttons and looking at the TV, as if you were using a remote control. And you’ve learned three signs now, “Milk,” “More,” and “All Done.” You are pulling yourself up and walking around things, learning how to take your fingers out of drawers, waving, kissing, hugging, acting out “So Big!” and responding to “Little Bear, NO!” (most of the time)! We’re still working on getting you to fall asleep on your own, but even during long frustrating nights at bedtime, your smile melts my heart. Happy 10 months, baby girl!

Box corners and other details

Well, I’ve “finished” my bumpers. I put the word “finished” in quotations because it didn’t turn out quite like I planned. Shocking, I know. The thing is, the foam pieces are too big to fit in the crib! I’m not sure whether it’s going to just be good enough as it is or if I’ll go back and cut them or something. My plan now is to give it a couple days and then decide. But for now, here’s what I have:

Sunny days are here again!

The late afternoon sun in the playroom/office inspired me to take some pictures of Little Bear. Pioneer Woman actions finished them off!

So tired…

that I forgot to post last night. My crib bumper still isn’t done and then I still have the skirt, valance, and shade to make. Also, a night light cover.

Tonight we had a play date. Little Bear loved hanging out with her buddies and was so interested in all the new toys.

“So, a needle pulling thread”

Still working on my crib bumper. I seem to recall someone warning me that this was a bigger project than I anticipated.

DSCN3846

In other news, Little Bear has come up with a schema to turn things (toys) on and off. She has a train that is activated by hitting the smokestack, a whale that is activated by hitting the spout, a doll that is activated by hitting the tummy… you get the idea. So now when she wants something to make noise, she starts hitting it in the center. If that doesn’t work, she gets bored and moves on. It’s really incredible to see her learn things as fast as she is.
